The Global Challenge
The world population will grow to about nine billion people by 2050, up from around six billion today. The demand for energy in the rapidly growing economies of the developing and newly industrialising countries is expected to double over the same period. This challenge can only be met if the need for protecting the climate is taken into account when solving our energy challenges. German industry has shown that the climate-friendly use of energy and economic growth do not contradict one another.
We must lead by example and show that measures for protecting the climate and economic growth are compatible. This is the only way we will be able to convince countries in other regions of the world to become partners for a global solution.
In order to effectively protect the climate, we must not only intensify our efforts in reducing emissions in the industrialized countries, but also limit the increase in emissions in the developing and newly industrialising countries. Technological cooperation between North and South plays a key role in this regard. The required international agreements must safeguard intellectual property as well as provide efficient mechanisms for supporting developing countries in their climate protection efforts.
